Vicious circle of value erosion in which the organisation cannot practice the values because of individuals and the individuals because of the system is the outcome of a paradigm of helplessness and incongruence caused by lack of competence in practicing values. We need to move to the paradigm of treating practice of values as a competence which can be developed.

- Uma Jain

Every excellent company we studied is clear on what it stands for, and takes the process of value shaping seriously. In fact, we wonder whether it is possible to be an excellent company without clarity on values and without having the right sorts of values.

- Peters and Waterman, Jr

Like the fundamental ideals of a great nation, church, school, or any other enduring institution, core ideology in a visionary company is a set of basic precepts that plant a fixed stake in the ground: “This is who we are; this is what we stand for; this is what we are all about.”

- James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras

Developing Competence in Values

There is growing emphasis on building a desired culture in organizations but the process of actualising the cherished values is complex and difficult. People with responsibility for leadership, despite their best efforts, often find themselves confronted with the gap between stated and practiced values. For building a desired culture, organizations need leaders who can, not only model the practice of desired values in their own behavior but also facilitate other people in clarifying and practicing their own and organizational values.

Also, in the current times, at the individual level, a sense of meaning and well being in life is a critical concern. While alternatives available are many, we often find ourselves experiencing a sense of meaninglessness in the midst of an apparently active and successful life.

Our programmes can be a helpful step in resolving these dilemmas at both individual and organizational levels. Our range of workshops on values meet the varied needs of people and organizations depending upon the time they want to invest and the depth and focus of learning they are looking for.

Our work on values is guided by models of individual and Organisational competence in values developed by Dr. Uma Jain based on her development work and action research in the field for the last two decades. Our experiential workshops take people through a journey of clarifying individual and organizational values and develop the courage and capabilities to practice their chosen values at both individual and organizational levels. Our workshops for culture building in organisations further facilitate the process of developing the Organisational competence to practice its chosen values.

In Ms. Uma Jain, I have met an unassuming person who values professional honesty and intellectual integrity. I attended her workshop on "Value Clarification". I realised that she has been doing significant work in this phenomenally important and nebulous area that the organisations and its leaders have been neglecting at their peril.
